Rokid Glasses review: smart glasses with a display in the UK

Rokid Glasses are smart glasses with a private display for supported captions, translation and prompts. Spoken words and translations appear as text visible to the wearer. That can be useful in meetings, across languages, or when having words available as text helps you follow a conversation. We sell and support the glasses at SightPhones; this review combines product information with a personal account of everyday use.

Professional and accessibility use

Subtitles and translation help during the conversation. Meeting subtitles show spoken words as text; translation shows speech in another language as text. Both give you something to read in the glasses while someone speaks. Recording is a separate use: I also use the glasses to record meetings.

My main uses are recording meetings, reading subtitles during meetings, and following the text of a podcast or audiobook while doing other things. Having text available gives me another way to follow spoken material. For me, the accessibility value is that additional visual route to information.

Translation in professional conversations. I have used translation in meetings with people who do not speak English and felt that we understood one another and could discuss commercial terms clearly. What you're actually buying

The private display is the key difference from audio-only smart glasses. Here are the main hardware and setup details.

Photos and videos. The built-in camera supports still photos and video recording, with a visible camera-recording indicator.

Navigation and notifications. Turn-by-turn directions and supported notifications can appear in your view. Stay aware of your surroundings while using directions.

Where they fall short

We'd rather you know this before ordering than after:

• Battery depends on the task. Battery life varies by task. Rokid lists around 45 minutes of intensive recording and 5 to 6 hours of music playback. Actual use depends on settings and conditions. The Power Cells accessory includes two removable rechargeable batteries and a compact charging box. A capsule battery attaches to the charging contacts on the glasses arm.
• Setup and connected features need the app. Online translation requires a network connection. Supported offline translation requires initial pairing and activation, followed by downloading the appropriate language model in the app. Check available languages and device requirements in the current Hi Rokid app.
• Fit and reading take adjustment. Some people saw the text clearly straight away; others needed the nosepads adjusted. I find the appearance broadly like ordinary glasses, but the fit a little awkward. Reading translations means glancing at the display as well as looking at the speaker. See what other people can see.
• Speaking to the AI assistant. In my use, I speak requests aloud, much as I would on a call through earbuds.
