Translation that stays in your line of sight is different in practice from translation you look down to read. This article covers how real-time translation through AI glasses works, what it does well, and where it falls short.
The basic mechanics
Rokid AI Glasses connect to your phone via Bluetooth. Translation processing happens on your phone — the glasses are the display, not the computing device. The phone's microphone picks up speech, sends it through the translation model, and pushes the result to the glasses display within a second or two.
This means you need your phone with you, with an active internet connection, for translation to work. Accuracy is tied to the translation models on your phone, which are among the best currently available for widely spoken languages.
What 30 languages actually means
The glasses support translation across more than 30 languages, including French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, and Turkish, among others.
Support is not uniform. Translation to and from English in widely spoken European and Asian languages is generally accurate for conversational speech. Rarer languages, regional dialects, and heavily accented speech are less reliable — as they are with every current translation tool. If you are travelling to a region where a minority language is primarily spoken, it is worth testing accuracy before relying on it in a consequential situation.
Spoken translation vs text translation
The glasses handle two distinct translation tasks. The first is spoken conversation: someone speaks, the glasses translate what they said into text in your vision. The second is text translation: point the camera at a sign, a menu, or a document, and the glasses translate the text.
Spoken translation is generally smoother and more immediately useful. Text translation requires pointing the camera at what you want translated, which is a more deliberate action.
The attention difference
Translation via phone requires a specific sequence: unlock phone, open app, point, wait, read. The result is on your phone screen, which you are holding.
Translation via glasses is different. The result appears where you are already looking. You can continue to face the person speaking. You don't pick up a phone. For a conversation, a meal, a market stall, this is noticeably less disruptive to the interaction itself.
Where it doesn't work well
Fast speech is harder. Overlapping speakers are very hard. Highly technical or domain-specific vocabulary — medical terminology, legal language, specialist trade vocabulary — is less reliable across all current translation tools, including this one.
The glasses also require Bluetooth range, so your phone needs to be within approximately ten metres. In practice, this means your pocket, which is where it usually is.
A useful feature, not a solved problem
Live translation is genuinely useful for travel, for conversations with international colleagues, and for navigating foreign environments. It is not perfect, and it is better to know its limits than to expect fluent, invisible interpretation across all languages and accents.
As translation models improve — which they are doing quickly — the accuracy of this feature will improve alongside them, without requiring new hardware.
